Mining monuments to honor the dead and remind the living

arriving in Alexandria, VirginiaThe Washington Post this Sunday morning reports ”an overnight spasm of violence in the District ended near dawn yesterday with seven men dead and three wounded including a triple slaying after a street argument, a drive-by shooting near an elementary school, a deadly domestic dispute, and a crap game that ended in a fusillade of bullets.” 

I am in Alexandria, Virginia visiting my son who is now stationed at the Pentagon.   On Friday he took me through the Pentagon.  We ate sandwiches in the central courtyard and then went to the chapel where the 9/11 plane hit and examined plans for the proposed memorial.  Then we wandered from the Washington Memorial to the Lincoln Memorial, stopping along the way to cry at the memorials for Word War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
