Sunday mining sermon: take the tail by the horns

A strange take on how to address mining-related pollution:

It was a good reminder of where my mind should have been. I shouldn’t have been thinking of what I could do, because when it comes down to it I am only human, and only one. The cross at the mine tailings reminded me of my tendency to despair in the face of degradation. Thankfully, I realized that I can do nothing on my own. We can do nothing on our own. As we live as witnesses to both the splendor and disfigurement of creation let us look to God for guidance and courage and let us lean upon the power of God for forgiveness.

This unusual solution to dealing with old tailings piles comes from To Inspire and Mobilize - Earth Ministry’s Blog on Faith and Environment.

While I have no comment on his faith, I must question his solution.  If there is an old tailings pile that is polluting the environment I would recommend remediation in accordance with whatever laws, regulations, and regulators there are.

Prayer has it place, but it is no substitute for human action in the face of evil, mines, or tailings.

Keep in mind that if good people do not act, evil will flourish.
